WFXY signed on in 1969, originally with the call letters WAFI, broadcasting on 1560. In the late 1970s, the station changed to the current frequency of 1490kHz in order to add nighttime service. Now, WFXY broadcasts from a tower site on Bloomsbury Avenue in Middlesboro, with 1,000 watts power, 24 hours per day. WFXY is also rebroadcast in the Middlesboro area on New Wave Communications Cable Channel 13. In late 2005, WFXY and its parent company, Countrywide Broadcasters, Inc., were acquired by Joshua Wilkey, a North Carolina businessman who moved to Middlesboro to run WFXY and sister station WANO. Soon after acquiring the station, Josh upgraded the station's facilities, completely replacing all the transmission equipment and renovating the studio complex at 2118 Cumberland Avenue in Middlesboro. Everything from microphone to transmitter at WFXY is brand new and state-of-the-art, resulting in a quality signal which matches our professional programming. Appropriately enough, WFXY is a Fox News Radio affiliate, and plays Today's Best Music. Listen for an hour, and you'll hear something you like, no matter what your taste! We supplement the music with local personalities and a healthy helping of local news and information, to result in a local radio station worth switching to! Do what so many the the Tri-State area have done, and make the SWITCH...to 1490 WFXY! |
